DVD Repair, Scratched DVDs and Unfinalized DVDs recovery tips and tricks

Prior to embarking on any of the following you need to eliminate all possible causes for having trouble with a DVD. Check to see your DVD burner has the latest firmware by going to the manufacturers website. Check to see if the media (brand and type) is compatible with your DVD burner/reader. Once you are certain that you have an unsuccessfully finalized DVD or a corrupt DVD you can get started.

Scratched DVD Disks
A simple visual inspection of the surface of the disc will tell you straight away whether your first problem is physical damage to the disc. If you can see a scratch or scratches on the surface then this may need to be addressed first. I say "may" because personally I use DVDFab to check to see if the disc will copy before I embark on any other course of action. DVDFab can read through a lot of surface errors because of its superior algorithms so I always take the lazy route and see if I can simply make a new copy. Now failing that you could go online and buy some expensive DVD scratch repair kit. Or you could do as I do and go to your local hardware store or even your own garage! All you will need is a bottle of any neutral colored (clear) car polishing product. Turtlewax happens to be the one I use. Take a VERY soft cloth (NOT paper towel), apply a little polish to the surface of the disc and GENTLY (remember, it's not a car!) rub the disc. Use straight strokes from the centre of the disc to the outer edge and continue to do this until you can see the scratch either disappear or reduce noticeably. Then using the same motion and fresh cloth buff the disc back to its original shine. Now try it with DVDFab. If you are still unsuccessful repeat the process until you can be certain, again by visual inspection, that the problem is now not coming from a damaged disc surface.

DVD Data Repair/ Recovery
The software you can use for this are DVDFab, Nero 8 (trial) and Isobuster. In the case of Isobuster you can try the free features first but failing that the full featured version needs to be purchased. A straight search of Yahoo or Google will find you the relevant sites.

Put the problem disc in the DVD drive of your computer then:
1. DVDFab. Try to use DVDFab first, as it has the best algorithms for reading anything on a DVD including how it integrates with the DVD drive, honestly sometimes I think it would read a bagel if you put it in there!

Select "DVD to DVD." DVDFab will now try to read the contents of the disc and, if it can, write the contents to a folder on your hard drive. It is as simple as that. It is either going to work or not! If it does do it then the copy you now have on your hard drive will be fully repaired and you can then burn a new copy.

Failing that:
2. Isobuster. Using the free functions try to make a disc image file and burn to another DVD. Isobuster has three alternate methods of dealing with data corruption. It can replace the corrupted area with nothing, with fake data or with a series of zeros. It will give you the choice and just select them in order to try each until one works. Isobuster will not create the disc image file unless it knows it will be successful. If Isobuster has created the file (note where it was going to put it first!) you will have to re-name the extension to .iso. Use the disc image file to burn a new DVD disc. At this point, if you now have a new disc, you need to check that new one carefully. There is always the possibility that Isobuster has just made a perfect copy of your faulty disc! So now you have a brand new faulty disc!

Failing that: You will need to pay for the full version of Isobuster but ONLY buy it if you got this far. If Isobuster free couldn't even read the disc then don't bother. From this point forward the best you can hope for is the extraction of the MPEG video files or data files on the disc. You ARE going to lose the video menus and you may lose some of the video or data.

Start Isobuster then load the disc.

When Isobuster has detected the files on the disc run the "Find Missing Files and Folders" option under the "File" menu.

You will now have an entry on the left hand column of "files and folders found by their signature."

Select that, then go to "File," "Files found via their signature" then "Extract files found via their signature." Choose a location and let it run.

Now you will have all the files where you selected them to go. The ones with the extension .VOB are the MPEG files from your disc wrapped in the VOB container. They can then be imported into a video editing program using the "Import DVD/VR" function or can be read by most DVD burning software.

Unfinalized discs
If at all possible try to get the original device used to create the disc to finalize it. If this is not possible or the original device is failing to successfully finalize the disc you may have to resort to the Isobuster routine above.

If you have been left with an otherwise perfectly good disc, but unfinalized, do the following.
This requires Nero 8 (Trial version).
Go to the Nero website, download and install Nero 8. Yes, it's big...sorry!

Place the unfinalized disc into the computer DVD tray. Open Nero 8 StartSmart.
Click "create and edit" at the top of the screen.
Click "author, edit and capture video." NeroVision 5 will start.
Click on the disk tools drop down menu then click "finalize disk."
In the option box that appears choose "no menus" and let it run.

Hopefully you now have a fully finalized disc that is readable.
Hope this helps!

About The Author:
Lance is not very good at writing about himself in the third person. A Comparison: Using Registry Repair Tools Versus Local Computer Repair Shop to improve PC performance

What do you think is a more effective way of repairing your PC system registry files? Taking it into your local computer repair shop or downloading a piece of diagnostics software to get the job done? Quite honestly it's not a cut and dry answer, but this article will explore the differences. More specifically we'll discuss how trial and error effects your bill, why software is consistent, and which choice is best for your PC problems. By the end of this article you should be able to decide if trying PC repair software is a good choice for you next time you run into a hardware of software error.

The Trial and Error Process of Technicians

You probably don't realize it but even those positioned as computer experts rarely know exactly what the problem is without first running some tests. Just like a doctor or auto repair tech there is a trial and error portion to diagnosing and repairing a problem. Most computer repair people have a list of issues in their mind that a problem could be, they start at the top and run down that list until they locate the issue. If they can't find it then it means research time. No one is an expert at everything, and quite often technicians will use scanning software to check your hardware, registry, and files to find a problem.

The consistency of Registry Repair tools

I'm not going to suggest that registry repair software is better then taking your PC to a repair shop. How ever, registry repair tools perform the same scan each time, similar to that list of issues the technician has in his had. The difference is that the software does it in about 10 minutes or less, every time. The software then diagnoses the issues found and offers a remedy all in well under a half hour.

The verdict here is that a piece of registry repair software performs a very similar task to your computer repair person. The difference is you're not paying the software by the hour, it's a one time fee to buy the software and that's it. Add in that software generally offers new updates as time goes on and you're actually protecting yourself for a longer period of time all for one price.

Which option is best for your PC repair needs?

I always recommend that you try diagnostic software first.

Why?

Simple the cost is much less then a trip to the repair shop, and most of these software publishers offers a money back guarantee. If you're not happy with how the program performed you just ask for your money back. What's the worst that could happen? You could end up at the repair shop anyways, but best case scenario you locate and fix the problem yourself saving you both time and money.

About the Author:

To learn more about how to fix registry errors visit http://www.registryrepaircenter.com a popular website offering registry cleaner reviews of the top products on the market.

Computer Tips: Is Your PC Running Slow?

by Jason Z Bell

5 tips to resolve this problem:

All computer users encounter slow performance or a sudden computer breakdown at one time or another. Quite often, registry problems are behind this gradual deterioration in your PC running slow.

When you install or uninstall applications, your system is infected by a virus, the system crashes, or many such activities occur on your system, several unwanted, invalid, and malicious entries get added to the registry that unnecessarily cause it to grow to a very large size. A large registry slows down, and as a result slows down your computer. In more severe conditions, registry problems may also cause various computer-related errors, which can eventually crash your system.

This can be completely avoided if you perform certain actions on regular basis to speed up the performance of your computer.

1) Perform Regular Virus Checks

If you are a regular net surfer, and don't care to systematically scan your system for viruses or malware, you are actually inviting trouble. So, practice cautions before you click the 'Free Download' button next time.

4) Troubleshooting Errors When They Appear

Do you know that more than 90 percent of computers contain corrupt and significantly harmful files with more than 200 errors? If you ever witness an error message on your screen, you should immediately take action to resolve it. This is because it may gradually start affecting the performance of your system and causing you to reboot, among other things. For example, if you notice a Regsvr32.exe error on your system, you should logon to the Microsoft technical support page and enter the name of the error. This would display a step-by-step process, which you can follow to resolve your problem.

5) Using A Windows Repair Software

Using an effective PC registry repair tool is probably one of the most simple and non-technical methods to tackle the slow performance of your computer. You can opt for an advanced registry scanner or scan your system's registry. This would also allow you to deal with multiple errors at the same time while enhancing the speed of your PC.

About the Author
PC Registry Repair has done the research so you don't have to! Cheap Computer Repair Does not Mean Bad Computer Repair

by: Guest

When people are looking for cheap computer repair they need to consider a few important things. The first is you get what you pay for. This does not mean you can?t find a great cheap computer repair company. I say this because many times the cheaper person is not insured and does not offer a guarantee. A perfect example of this is just last week. I had a customer who gave me call and said they needed their computer repaired. They took it to a guy they found on craigslist and yes he was cheap but the guy also had their computer for a full week and the issue was not resolved. He did say he had 20 years of computer repair experience but they still got burned.

When choosing a cheap computer repair company always ask how long the company has been in business. If they have only been open a few months consider going some were else. 85% of all companies do not make it to the one year mark.

Another great question to ask is if they have any computer certifications. At the very least they should have an A certification. This is the most basic cert in the industry.

When you find someone who offers a great price ask about any guarantees and if the price includes the full cost of the repair. Some places charge by the hour. I never go this route for computer repair. The tech might quote you $25 dollars an hour and say it will only take 2 hours to repair. Then 5 hours later you paid double what you wanted. The guarantee matters as well. Being in the business I can tell you that yes 90% of the time I am able to remove the virus the first time. However you really do not fully know if the virus is gone until a few days later. If you missed one trace the thing can reactivate and that is were the guarantee comes into place.

Having you computer repaired online for software issues and viruses is the cheapest way to go hands down. Be sure to find one that has a ?No Fix No Fee? policy and that charges by the service and not the hour. This way you know ahead of time if the issue is not fixed you do not pay and you know exactly how much the repair will cost ahead of time. Be sure and ask what kinds of guarantees the company offers as well. If your issue comes back you want to know it will be taken care of with out any further costs to you.

About the Author
plrpro. Registry clean up programs - How do they work and do you need one?

by ihenman

The windows registry system is the central nervous system of your PC. It stores information about software programs, file locations, short cuts, and file paths. As we install software the registry gets updated, and when software is removed it gets updated, if the uninstall process goes correctly.

Some software can leave behind broken file paths, empty registry keys, and non existent short cuts after their deleted. Why does this happen? Because the uninstall process for the program didn't do it's job correctly. So what can you do about it? Registry clean up programs are designed specifically to scan your windows registry files looking for such empty items and errors.

How do Registry Repair Tools work?

The process is simple, a registry clean up program scans your entire registry and provides you with a list of items it believes are errors or out of date information. You then have the alternative to automatically repair all of the items found, or you can manually review each one prior to correcting it. For most beginners it's easier to automatically remove and repair all items. How ever what do you do if a wrong items gets deleted?

What happens if you make a mistake?

Beside scanning your windows registry files most registry cleaners also provide a backup feature. This backup makes copies of your current registry files and settings prior to repairing them. Why is this important? Because if you choose the auto repair method you could accidentally delete or repair something that wasn't actually an error. How ever because you have a backup copy of the old settings and files you can undo and revert back to the way things were before the repair.

How often should I scan my registry?

Most registry clean up tools have a schedule setting. You can set the software to regularly scan your system registry and auto fix any items it finds. Along with this you can also tell the program to make a new backup each time. This way you're always keeping items from building up, and ensuring you have a fresh backup point to start over from if need be.

It depends on your computer usage how often you should scan your registry. Average computer users should consider scanning once every 4-6 months, how ever computers that are used more often, and especially those that are installing and removing a lot of programs should scan more often.

About the Author: To learn more about registry repair software visit http://www.registryrepaircenter.com a popular website that reviews registry cleaner software.

When, Why, And How Should I Reformat My Hard Drive?

Submitted By: Timothy Scheiman

Sometimes we have no choice when it comes to reformatting your hard drive. Just make sure you understand that all your data will be lost unless you take the time to backup files you do not want to lose. This should only be done as a last resort.

When should I reformat my hard drive? If your windows files are corrupted beyond repair or you have files missing and all your attempts to repair have failed. If you have a virus and all your attempts at removal has not worked. Another reason would be if your computer is infected with spy-ware to the point you cannot open Internet Explorer or your computer's performance has slowed considerably. Another reason would be if your computer will not finish a successful de-frag

Why should I reformat my hard drive? One of the biggest complaints I used to get when working with a clients computer was that it was so slow and it used to be a lot faster. Computers will lose performance over many months of use if it has not been de-fragged, multiple spy-ware infections, multiple virus infections, registry errors, files left after we un-installed programs we are not using. All these factors over time will slow your computer to a crawl. It would be a good idea when your computer is to the point that all your attempts to correct the problems have not improved the situation. If your at this point than its time you make preparations to reload your computer.

How should I reformat my hard drive?

1. Before you can begin to reformat your hard drive you must try to backup any files you may want to keep. Keep in mind if your computer is infected so can the files your backing up be infected. Before you proceed with the backup process separate the files you want to keep into a separate folder. Any folders that contain files you want to keep you can drag and drop those into this folder too.

2. Run a scan virus and spy-ware on this folder and make sure these files are not infected. Any files that cannot be repaired get rid of them.

3. You can backup your folder easy if you have CDRW or zip drive. If you have a secondary hard drive you could just drag and drop those files into it. Just make sure you label your folder backup so you can find it easily. Many of you have songs and pictures you want to keep you can backup those too as long as they are clean from infection.

4. Don't forget to backup your history and bookmarks folder if you do not want to los that information. Take inventory of all items you want to keep and put them in this folder and scan them. This should keep your losses to minimum.

5. Your computer manufacturer would have given you a restore CD and driver CD. You should have least one of each depending on the manufacturer you may have more than just two. If you cannot find your CD's or they are damaged you can get replacement from your computer manufacturer for nominal fee. It is a good idea when you first take your computer out of the box to put the CD's in a safe place. You can also make backups of them so if they become damaged you don't have to buy replacements.

6. If your computer came loaded with Windows XP it is very easy to reformat your computer with the CD. Do not copy Windows over Windows always delete the partition when it prompts you and create a new partition. The next step it will ask you to format the drive and it completes these steps easily for you.

7. It will than run Windows setup and load XP back onto your computer.

8. If your computer is older and your running Windows 98/ME the process is basically the same except depending on your computer manufacturers restore disk you may have a some different steps. You may be required to reformat your drive with a DOS boot disk. Consult your manual for instructions.

9. Your computer manufacturer also supplied driver disks and possibly applications disks. Once Windows is loaded you would use your driver disk to load the applicable drivers you need to operate your computer efficiently. Once all your drivers are installed and working correctly you can install any applications.

10. Your computer manufacturer bundled some trial applications with your computer that the licenses have expired putting those back on at this point is not necessary. You do not have to put on any applications you are not using. If your not using them just save the space for other things.

11. Now you can put the backup folder you created back on your computer. Once you have accomplished that you can drag and drop the files and folders into their original positions over writing any folders Windows created.

12. Now you would install your virus and spy-ware program and make sure you can get on the Internet.

13. Once your on the Internet do not do anything else until you have done all the windows updates. This is critical so you get your browsers security updated. Install any service packs and make sure your Windows firewall is activated.

14. Run any virus definition updates and spy-ware updates.

15. This process make take several hours to get everything up and running but it is important that you do this so your computer operates efficiently.

If you have completed all the steps congratulations you just reloaded your computer and your ready to go.

About the Author:

A+ Certified Technician with many years experience in the Computer Support field. http://pcxpress.blogspot.com/

Top 10 Ways To Make A Computer Run Faster

by: Brooks Carver

Today I am going to be talking about different ways you can make a computer run faster. There is actually a lot you can do yourself that will boost your PC's performance. So lets take a look at different ways we can remedy that slow computer of yours!

1. Free Up Disk Space

A great way to make a computer run faster is to free up some disk space. Windows comes with a disk cleanup tool that helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete without messing anything up, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

How to use disk cleanup tool.

* Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

* In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list. (If you have multiple hard drives you will have to select which one to scan.)

* Clear the check boxes for files that you don't want to delete, and then click OK.

* When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click OK.

2. Use Defrag Tool

When you add a file or a new program to a new computer, the hard drive is relatively empty so new data is saved to the hard drive in one whole block. When you need to use that information, the computer can quickly access it because it is all in one place. Defragging your system is definitely a way to make a computer run faster.

How to use defrag tool.

* From the start menu point to "all programs"
* Point to "Accessories"
* Point to "System Tools"
* Click on "Disk Defragmenter"
* The disk defragmenter will display the hard drives on your computer. Just select and click Defragment.

3. Get rid of spyware

Definition

Spyware is software with malicious intent - by design; it does something bad to your computer. Usually, it gets installed without your knowledge. It sometimes takes advantage of the fact that most people click "I Agree" to software licenses without reading them.

The only way to get rid of spyware is to have some kind of scanner, sort of like an anti-virus. In order to make a computer run faster and keep it safer your going to need an anti-spyware program. This is tricky, a lot of the spyware programs out there are malicious and will actually add viruses and spyware to your computer by using the "spyware scanner and blocker". So please remember to be very careful when choosing your anti-spyware program.

4. Find and repair disk errors

Detect and Repair Disk Errors

In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.

How to run the error checking utility.

* Click Start, and then click My Computer.
* In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.
* In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.
* Click the Check Now button.
* In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
* If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.
Tip: Only select the Automatically fix file system errors check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.

5. Get an external hard drive

Adding an External Hard Drive to your computer will allow you to clear out a lot of the things you don't need to be storing on your normal hard drive.

A great example would be your music or pictures. All those songs and pictures are sitting on your computer making it go slower. You will see a decline in your computers performance as soon as you use over half of your hard drive space.

Moving all your songs or pictures to your external hard drive will free up a lot of space on your main hard drive. You can even move applications such as photoshop or games.

An external hard drive is also handy because it is portable. You can unplug it from your computer and take it to a friends house and plug it in there, sharing photos and pictures very easily.

This is truly a great way to make a computer run faster.

About The Author

My name is Brooks Carver and I am a pretty die hard computer tech.
